The Affordability Myth

Have you ever had someone tell you “I can’t afford it”?

 

Usually our initial thought when someone tells us that is that they can barely pay their rent, they are almost out of food and they are living paycheck to paycheck. Sometimes that is true, but it could also mean:

  • They have allocated a certain amount of money towards “discretionary spending” each month and they have used that up (maybe next month they will cut something else out and be able to buy your service)

  • They honestly don’t see the value in what you are offering --- perhaps you need to do a better job explaining the VALUE in your services

  • Some people just love to “bargain” or “haggle” and perhaps you need to come back with a package deal to make it feel like they have gotten an even better deal. 

  • Sometimes you can simply ask what they could spend. They might throw out a figure that you can work with.
